Miley Cyrus Tops 'Role Model' of Year List

Miley Cyrus has been named one of 2011’s top role models, according to a recent survey.

Hollywood Life conducted a poll on their website allowing their readers to vote for the year’s most positive celebrities. The site also named Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and a few other young celebrities as stars on the list, stating that “we’re lucky to have.”

“When people think about Hollywood, they focus too often on stars who party hard, spend thousands shopping, treat marriage frivolously and care more about dieting and primping than using their celebrity to do good,” wrote the news source. “But that’s not true at all of a new crop of young stars!”

Cyrus, mentioned in HL’s article Friday, gained prominence for her role on Disney’s “Hannah Montana.” As she transitioned into more adult roles, the 19-year-old actress received criticism lauding her as a bad role model.

In spite of past criticism for revealing outfits and controversial lyrics, Hollywood Life commends Cyrus for her efforts to raise awareness of those suffering from the Haiti earthquake.

Last spring, Cyrus appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” stating that she does not aim to shock people.

“It’s not about how far I can push things so people will believe I’m not Hannah Montana anymore,” the actress told the show’s host, Oprah Winfrey.

“You just make the music that you love and because I’m growing up, you know, so does my music. It’s not about trying to make a statement about growing up. You know… You just do.”

Additionally, the news source attributes the poll voters to have chosen the actress for her ability to admit that she makes mistakes. Cyrus has used her Twitter account in recent months combating accusations of plastic surgery as well as weight gain.

“I love MYSELF & if you could say the same you wouldn’t be sitting on your computer trying to hurt others.”

Cyrus continued to defend herself against critics, “ I don’t wanna be shaped like a girl I LOVE being shaped like a WOMAN & trust me ladies your man won’t mind either,” and added a picture of a victim of anorexia.

The Disney star narrowly missed the number one spot on HL’s poll Friday. Bieber came in as this year’s top role model with his generous donations to numerous charities. The 17-year-old donated the proceeds from his Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe, to charities including Make-A-Wish and Pencils of Promise, in addition to $100,000 to the Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

Bieber was also recently listed on DoGood’s annual tally of charitable celebrities, “Top 20 Celebs Gone Good.” He came in at number two after Lady Gaga. Cyrus also made the list at number 18.
