"Mortal Kombat X" introduced players to its first gay character after it released Patch 1.02 Monday.

In a Chapter 4 flashback scene, original character Raiden urges Kung Jin to join the Shaolin monks to which Kung Jin despairingly confides he is not likely to be accepted. Raiden then comforts him saying "they care only about what is in your heart, not who your heart desires."

Fans have picked up on the subtle exchange and took to game forums and social media to discuss their interpretation of the cutscene.

Dominic Cianciolo, NetherRealm's cinematic director, went on Twitter to confirm the theory, lauding fans of the game for being observant, and effectively informing all "Mortal Kombat" players that Kung Lao's bow-wielding cousin is homosexual.

It also represents Kung Jin as a closet homosexual, as opposed to being openly gay, like "Dragon Age's" Dorian Pavus, or even bisexual, like "Borderlands 2" commando character, Axton.

Ed Boon, "Mortal Kombat" series creator, told IGN earlier in the week the tenth installment of the franchise represents the biggest launch in its game history, with extensive promotions on print and television, as well as gameplay footage released in a number of gaming outlets.
