'Narcos' Season 4 Plot News: Focus Shifts to Juarez Cartel in Mexico

The fourth season of "Narcos" on Netflix will shift to the Juarez cartel in Mexico. The series hinted on this plot when the Mexicans met with Pancho Herrera of the Cali cartel in the third season.

Amado Carrillo Fuentes controlled the Juarez cartel after killing his boss, Rafael Aguilar Guajardo. José María Yazpik played the character in "Narcos" season 3 but it's unclear if he will reprise the role in season 4 or if his character will be the new season's central focus.

Carillo Fuentes, in real-life, earned the nickname "El Señor de Los Cielos" (Lord of the Skies) for his penchant for using personal jets for his drug trade. The Juarez cartel thrived under him in the 1990s with his partnership with Cali but Juarez's operations actually began in the '70s under Aguilar Guajardo.

Actor Pêpê Rapazote, who played Jose "Chepe" Santacruz Londono in the third season, told Heavy that "Narcos" season 4 might go back in time and explore the beginnings of the Juarez cartel. Netflix, however, has not released any production and casting announcements for the new season in light of the killing of its location manager in Mexico.

Filming for "Narcos" season 4 might have been stalled following the incident. Star Pedro Pascal (Javier Pena) relayed that it might not be worth filming the show if it threatens the safety and security of the cast and crew. Pascal himself does not know if he'll be back next season.

"I would not assume [returning]," Pascal told The Hollywood Reporter. "I think we may do something really interesting that surprises people. I think you can believe [Pena's] final words."

Meanwhile, "Narcos" emerged as Netflix's most popular show based on unofficial viewership rankings from PricewaterhouseCoopers. The survey compared top-rating shows across three streaming platforms – Amazon, Hulu and Netflix – and shows like "The Man in the High Castle," "The Handmaid's Tale," "The Tick," "11.22.63," and "Stranger Things" also ranked high.

"Narcos" season 1 to 3 remains streaming on Netflix.
