National Chocolate Cupcake Day Today, Celebrations Flood Twitter

People across the United States are celebrating their favorite dessert as National Chocolate Cupcake Day arrived on Friday.

Observed each year on October 18th, National Chocolate Cupcake Day commemorates the decadent, tasty after-dinner treat.

The history of the cupcake is said to have begun during the 19th century, and its name is said to have come about since the miniature cakes are baked in "cups."

However, another theory states that the cupcake got its name since the recipe which requires ingredients to be measured by the cup, including butter, flour, and sugar.

Although Friday is National Chocolate Cupcake Day, there are dozens of flavors to the popular sweet treat. Additionally, there are countless options when it comes to icing and decorating cupcakes.

Popular decorative themes include holiday-specific toppings. For instance, Halloween parties often include chocolate cupcakes with orange frosting, and sometimes even scarier add-ons such as spider-shaped candy.

Cupcakes have become quite popular in bakeries across the nation, and some shops exclusively specialize in the sweet treat, including famous bakeries such as Crumbs Bake Shop, Sprinkles Cupcakes and Magnolia Bakery.

America's obsession with the cupcake has even translated to television with series such as TLC's "Cake Boss" and the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."

As a perfect prelude to National Chocolate Cupcake Day, National Dessert Day took place just four days before, marking celebration of all foods forbidden until after dinner.

Meanwhile, National Chocolate Cupcake Day has become a trending topic on Twitter Friday with countless users sharing about their celebrations.

"Today is National Chocolate Cupcake Day," Tony posted. "I don't think many people will have trouble celebrating this one."

The Canadian bakery in Canada, Sweet Temptations, posted to their account: "We're celebrating and baking for a baby shower, and a big Halloween party!"

Furthermore, many bakeries are offering invites and deals on their chocolate cupcakes on National Chocolate Cupcake Day.

"It is National Chocolate Cupcake Day," Amish Country posted. "Celebrate by eating at Dutch Maid Bakery in Goshen and Mini Delights in Downtown Elkhart [Indiana]."
