'New Girl' Season 7 Plot News, Air Date: Jess and Nick Still Together; Schmidt to Be Stay-at-Home Dad

"New Girl" may be ending soon, but fans can rest assured knowing that their favorite group of pals will still be happy in the seventh and final season of the comedy series.

According to TVLine, season 7 will open with a four-year time jump into the future. After spending numerous seasons dating other people, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) finally got back together in season 6. Fans will be happy to know that the couple will still be together in the upcoming season.

The final season of the show will also see Schmidt (Max Greenfield) being a stay-at-home dad to his daughter Ruth and absolutely loving it. No word, though, on what Cece (Hannah Simone) will be up to. Finally, Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad) will also still be together, though the publication notes that their relationship will likely see a significant evolution.

In April, executive producers Dave Finkel and Brett Baer revealed to Entertainment Weekly what they had planned for a then-uncertain seventh season. They talked about giving Winston more work stories and exploring Nick's career path.

"In a world where Schmidt and Cece and Winston and Jess have all sort of found the thing that they've been looking for, at least in their work lives, that Nick's still on his road is interesting," Finkel said. "I think there's a lot of fun to be had there."

"I'd like to see what [Winston's] like getting promoted at work and becoming a detective — I think that would be fun," Baer added.

"New Girl" was previously thought to have been canceled following the conclusion of its sixth season. However, Fox ultimately chose to renew the series for a shortened eight-episode final season after the network found room on its schedule. Creator Liz Meriwether also played an integral part in its renewal after she pitched a final season storyline that was too good to turn down.
