Nintendo NX rumors: Game console to support cross-play

The Nintendo NX platform is rumored to have support for cross-platform play, and this feature would allow the console to compete better with Sony and Microsoft.

Information on the upcoming Nintendo NX game console is still scant, and the company itself is careful not to release any information about it to the public. Still, leaked details have made their way to the media, and last weekend's insider confirmed that the Japanese tech giant wants the Nintendo NX to be a cross-platform console, according to Game N Guide.

Nintendo's rumored intention to provide cross-platform support for the NX has been an unpopular issue for the company since it began manufacturing the console. Both Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox One have also been the target of criticism because of lack of support, Trusted Reviews reports.

Recently, the Japanese console maker filed a patent for a disc-less games system. This move suggests that Nintendo may be taking a digital path soon. Related documents also reveal that the said system would feature a card slot. This probably points to an external memory or cartridge for the Nintendo 3DS, the report details.

According to the inside source, Nintendo wanted the NX to be similar to the PS and Xbox. In addition, Nintendo reportedly wants NX users to be able to play 3Ds and Wii U games.

The leaked information delighted experts, who viewed Nintendo's move as a bid to broaden its market gain traction over its rivals. But they are worried that it might affect some of the older 3DS and Wii U games by the time the NX is released, the report relays.

The Nintendo NX was unveiled during the recent E3 conference, but no information was released about it at the time. As of now, the release date of the NX is yet to be confirmed, but there are reports that it will be available by July 2016.
