Officer Finds Baby Left for Dead in Paper Bag; 26 Years Later, They're Like Family (VIDEO)

The night of December 30, 1987 was typically chilly in the San Francisco Bay area when California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Gibbons made his usual stop along Interstate 280 to stretch his legs. He heard a rustle from a paper bag on the ground. When he opened it, he found a newborn, just hours old, wrapped in a towel and left to die.

He brought the baby girl to his car, wrapped her in his duty jacket and took her to the hospital. She suffered from hypothermia, and doctors weren't sure she'd make it. But she did, and today, that rescued baby is 26-year-old Ashley Wyrick.

The two kept in touch over the years, and Wyrick's adoptive parents asked Gibbons to be her godfather. Now, she's in regular contact with the retired officer's family.
