'Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire' Release Date Rumors: Game Sets Record-High Crowdfunding; Campaign Ends With $4 Million

Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming role-playing game sequel "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire" has recently broken records after its crowdfunding campaign ended with more than $4 million.

The campaign via The Fig concluded last week and it undoubtedly ended with flying colors. Out of the initial goal of $1.1 million, 33,614 backers supported the campaign and pitched in for the title's development, helping Obsidian Entertainment accumulate $4,407,598 of funds. That is 400 percent above the target.

Over at The Fig campaign website for "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire," the developers detailed what game additions will be put into the title as their funds grew.

When the campaign reached $3 million last Feb. 19, Obsidian Entertainment announced the inclusion of the Companion Relationships feature. Four Sidekicks were added into the game after the campaign crossed the $3.25 million mark last Feb. 22.

A day after, the game got an additional quarter of a million funding and said that if it reached $3.75 million, Obsidian Entertainment would include the unchartered islands content and a simplified Chinese localization of the game. When the "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire" campaign reached the target $4.25 million, it enabled the developers to also include the Intelligent Weapon.

Now that the campaign ended at about a hundred thousand under $4.5 million — the needed amount to add the Ship Crew content — gamers and fans can still help "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire" by sending their contributions through Paypal via the game's backer site.

Obsidian Entertainment is not new in achieving record-breaking crowdfunding campaigns. For the first "Pillars of Eternity" game, the studio worked with Kickstarter to gather crowd support and accumulated more than $3.98 million of funds. It was one of the 25 most-funded projects on the crowdfunding platform.

The studio went with The Fig for "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire" due to the platform's rewards-based crowdfunding, and the numbers will prove that the title is still one of the most supported games.

The upcoming RPG title will reportedly maintain the franchise's isometric perspective and is slated for release in 2018.
