Preacher Season 1 Update,Spoilers; Who Survives After Annville Gets Wiped? Did Jesse Succumb to the Dark Side?

Only three people will survive. How will this affect Season 2?

"Preacher" will have its first season finale on Tuesday with an episode entitled "Call and Response". The citizens of Annville, Texas is faced with the shocking truth that God is missing. While Jesse Custer leads his congregation to come to grips with this, everybody in town gets wiped off the face of the earth.

Who Survived?

According to EP Sam Catlin, nearly every one of the characters that viewers have been familiar with will be gone because of the plant manager's negligence in watching the electro methane reactor.

Eugene Root is saved but will still see some sort of hell. However, sweet church mouse Emily will be gone, as well as Jesse's nemesis, Odin Quincannon. Odin has avoided going to the church for decades.

In the end, only three survivors will be left like a holy trinity. Jesse, Tulip and the vampire Cassidy. They will be on a crusade to find the missing God after Jesse becomes frustrated with God and questions his existence. According to Catlin, Jesse's journey in Season 1 put into context his mission for the next season.

Jesse's Dark Side Almost Wins

Also in the episode, Jesse was about to give in to his dark side when he decided to throw caution to the wind and throw in the last punch that would kill Carlos. It was Tulip who held him back by telling him that knowing he would do that for her is enough. The finale gave viewers the backstory of Jesse and Tulip that was also neatly wrapped up in the finale.

Vertigo Comic Book

Catlin, along with the other Eps Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, said it was their intention to make Preacher Season 1 to be a prequel to the Vertigo comic book, "Gone to Texas" series. He says, "In the end, we had to clear the deck, there's so many great characters from the comic to come."

The season finale however, veers from the comic book subplots. The character of Carlos, his running away with the cash from the bank and Tulip having a miscarriage of Jesse's baby are unique to the TV series. Catlin admits that they set up Carlos to be the mysterious villain and a scapegoat to Tulip and Jesse's disappointments and being broken hearted.

Where to Season 2?

What can we expect from Season 2? The last shot of Preacher season finale suggests that viewers will get to know better the Saint of Killers, credited in the episode as The Cowboy. Jesse's mother who figured in Jesse and Emily's conversations may be making an appearance.

Where the holy trinity will end up in their search for God may be the main storyline of Season 2. In the comic book version, New York, Austin and San Francisco figured prominently.
