PS4 vs Xbox One Graphics: Playstation Graphics Numbers 'Meaningless,' Says Microsoft

In the war of PS4 vs. Xbox One, Playstation is being touted as the winner of the graphics specs, but Microsoft executives say to not be fooled by fancy tech numbers.

"The problem is that Sony decided to go out and publish a bunch of numbers, which are in some ways meaningless. Because this isn't like 1990, when it was 16-bit versus 32-bit," Albert Penello, Xbox product planning boss told "As a matter of fact, they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts. Our guys'll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance."

Penello talks about the real matters of the systems, the games. He feels users should focus on the great memories and experiences they have while using the console rather than who has superior graphics or features.

"You bought a system to play great games and have great experiences. I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically – on top of all the magic we're going to add with the instant switching, and the power of the cloud," he explained.

"So the whole numbers game – yeah, I've been following it online and it's like, we tried having that argument last time. Do I want to talk about HDMI 1.3 or 1.4, it's like 'argh!' It doesn't matter. Did you see Call of Duty, it looks (expletive) awesome! It's going to be great, you know. So we're just saying, it's not worth the debate," he said excitedly to Xbox Magazine U.K.

So while graphics may be an unfair comparison for the two new consoles, a more fair battle would be over independent gaming.

Microsoft is infuriating developers of Indie games because they can't publish on the Xbox Live network and instead have to find a publisher and sign a deal of exclusivity if signing on with Xbox, according to

Essentially, that would take away the entire notion of being an independent game. In addition, if the developer would like to make changes to a game, they would have to pay to do so.

For Indie companies, these charges and limitations could totally wipe them out since their games are made cheaply without the backing of a large scale company.

"Why do we need a publisher when we self-finance our games, we build our own IP, we manage our own IP and we've turned nearly two million units online as indie publishers sold – not free downloads? Why? What's wrong with us?" LorneLanning, president and co-founder of Oddworld Inhabitants, told Eurogamer. "Who's in touch with their audience? And who seems out of touch with their audience? All we know is we've tried to get our games on their platform and we can't do it – and I even helped them release the box."

Unlike the Xbox, PS4 is affording Indie developers the ability to self-publish games in hopes that premium content will reign triumphant on the console.

"Our vision is crystal clear: to continue to lead the console space as the most open and inclusive platform for developers, while providing gamers with an endless variety of beautiful, challenging and fantastic experiences," Adam Boyles, vice president of third party relations at SCEA, told
