'Rick and Morty' Season 4 Release Date: Co-Creator Talks Success and Toxic in Fanbase After Show's Recent Record-Breaking Feat

With the recent feat achieved by "Rick and Morty," fans of the show can count on seeing more adventures of the titular duo in the years to come.

The Adult Swim series created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon was hailed the number one comedy on all of television for the 18–34 demographic for the 2017 calendar year.

This means that "Rick and Morty" managed to trounce even the classic and long-running animation television shows like "The Simpsons."

In the process, "Rick and Morty" also raked in the highest ratings in the history of Adult Swim, an achievement that ensures the future of the show. Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang president Christina Miller said of the success of the show:

"Rick and Morty" is truly what a modern day hit looks like across multiple screens and multiple touchpoints. Dan and Justin have created a world, not just a show, and fans are completely engaged.

That being said, the series is clearly blowing up and won't see its end anytime soon — good news to fans who just can't get enough of the duo and their problematic family.

The show has earned millions of fans including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who gushed about the season 3 finale he described as "disgustingly good."

Through the official "Rick and Morty" Twitter handle, the folks behind the show replied "Thanks, E. Just riding this out until the singularity hits, you know?" The conversation then quickly went from the episode to physics.

Of course, with success of such a grand scale come disadvantages, which include toxicity in the fanbase — something that Harmon is aware of.

At the New York Comic Con, he expressed his dismay toward this to Polygon, explaining that while he understands the need of some to defend a show they love, he is not one to tolerate the toxic environment it creates.

Look, I'm one of these guys. I grew up shaking my fist at this "Star Wars" movie over that "Star Wars" movie ... as long as I can keep making this show, hate it all you want. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't trolling a little bit by making sure that a season they had political reasons to hate was one of the best that we did. Then again, I can't manipulate the quality of a show season to season. But what I can do is make sure it's a really good season.
