Santorum Shrugs Off Question on Aborting 'Gay Babies'

Rick Santorum’s conservative social views have some people asking curious questions. That includes one woman who asked the GOP presidential hopeful on Monday if he would "abort a gay baby."

After a campaign speech in Rivier College in Nashua, N.H., an unidentified female asked Santorum, "Would you abort a gay baby?" Santorum grumbled a brief, nearly inaudible sigh and shook his head.

The question was likely prompted by Santorum’s widely publicized views on gay marriage and abortion, as the former Penn. senator has been outspoken against both issues. Despite those opinions, Santorum said in a Jan. 8 debate that he would still love and provide for a son if he grew up to be gay.

"I would love him as much as I did the second before he said it," Santorum said. "And I would try to do everything I can to be as good of a father to him as possible."

At a speech in Concord, N.H., Santorum outlined his view on gay marriage – a position that critics have been quick to project onto his stance of homosexuality in general.

"Because I believe we are made the way God made man and woman, and man and woman come together to have a union to produce children which keeps civilization going and provide the best environment for children to be raised," Santorum said, "I think that is something society should value and should give privileged status over a group of people who want to have a relationship together."

Santorum added, however, that he supported Pennsylvania's measure to legalize same-sex marriage because the rest of the state legislature supported it.

Regarding abortion, Santorum has expressed many times his pro-life opinion, going as far as to say at one debate that the "flawed" social security system suffers now because the U.S. does not "have enough workers to support the retirees" because "a third of the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion."

After clarifying that he believes abortion constitutes murder, Santorum said on "Meet the Press" in June 2010: "I believe that any doctor that performs an abortion, I would advocate that any doctor that performs an abortion, should be criminally charged for doing so."

Santorum has stated that he would welcome a compromise between pro-life and pro-choice advocates to allow abortions only in the cases of rape, incest or risk to a mother.
