'Scandal' Season 6 News, Updates, Air Date Schedule: Despite Delay, Season 6 Promises 'Fantastic' Season with Twists and Surprises

Fans were disappointed as "Scandal" Season 6 was a no-show during its usual slot in ABC's "Thank God It's Thursday" lineup, which consists of "How to Get Away With Murder" and "Grey's Anatomy." But ABC and the show's cast quickly moved to quash rumors that the show had been axed, and was in truth delayed because of Kerry Washington's (who plays Olivia Pope) pregnancy.

In fact, ABC had already announced beforehand that "Scandal" Season 6 won't be airing its premiere during its usual fall schedule. The show is currently working around lead star Kerry Washington's pregnancy, who's expecting her second child. ABC, however, is unable to give a specific release date for "Scandal" Season 6, although it's currently estimated to air around January 2017.

Will 'Scandal' Season 6 be using Washington's pregnancy?

Filming for "Scandal" Season 6 had already begun since July. Several reports have speculated that the writers will somehow be working around Washington's pregnancy and will be written into the series. But E! News quoted Kerry Washington as saying the producers are planning to hide the pregnancy instead. And that's all well and good for Olivia Pope, who's currently busy running Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) and Jake Ballard's (Scott Foley) campaign for the US presidency.

As for disgruntled fans, the long wait is not in vain: No less than the ABC President Channing Dungey had confirmed that not only will "Scandal" Season 6 return to form on television next year, but that the upcoming season has a "fantastic script," according to Pop Sugar. A bunch of surprises and twists await "Scandal" Season 6, including Fitz's (Tony Goldwyn) support for both Mellie and Jake's candidacies, despite the latter being Olivia Pope's current lover.

Wll Mellie become president?

Looks like "Scandal" Season 6 will mostly be Liv, Mellie, Jake and Fitz working together to avert Cyrus Beene's (Jeff Perry) treacherous plans to propel Frank (Ricardo Chavira) to the presidency. Hell hath no fury like a scorned lover, however, so it looks like this unlikely party will be getting help from Tom (Brian Letscher), with whom Cyrus had broken up last season. Sadly, fans wouldn't be able to see them plot against Cyrus mid-election season, as "Scandal" Season 6 will be kicking off during the election night itself. Will the presidency go to the Republican favorite Mellie, or to the Democrat Frank and his VP stooge Cyrus?

Prepare yourselves for the ensuing chaos in the White House. "Scandal" Season 6 will return January 2017.
