'Supergirl' Season 1 News, Spoilers: 'Supergirl' EP on Possible Season 2 Renewal, Mystery Pod Occupant

CBS' "Supergirl" wrapped up its freshman season with a cliffhanger as the show faces a tentative future.

In "Better Angels," which aired Monday, April 18, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) saved National City, dealt with Non (Chris Vance) and Indigo (Laura Vandevoort), and kissed James (Mehcad Brooks). The superheroine also found out that a Kryptonian space pod had crash-landed on Earth. But because the pod was empty, fans will have to wait until season 2 (should there be one) to find out who the occupant was.

As "Supergirl" executive producer Ali Adler recently told The Hollywood Reporter, the move to leave the pod occupant's identity a question was a conscious (and optimistic) decision they made based on the network expressing interest in airing another season of the action/adventure drama.

"We definitely want to continue making more of this show," Adler told THR. "We all have to be positive."

According to Adler, CBS Corporation president and CEO Les Moonves had said that all of the network's freshman series will be returning and that she is hoping that that statement includes "Supergirl."

"I think everyone at CBS wants this show to last and I think we're all working for that angle," the "Supergirl" boss added.

As Adler explained, ending season 1 on a major cliffhanger was more a creative decision than a move based on the business element. Instead of concluding the season in such a way that it could also stand as a series ender, they chose to use it to set up the characters' story arcs in season 2.

"Season 2 is going to be more reflective of their past and how they're going to change their future as a result of it in a really emotional way," she said.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "Supergirl" executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased the identity of whoever was in the Kryptonian pod, saying, "It's an important character, and they'll play an important role in season 2."

"We can't assume it's an ally for certain," Adler told THR. But whoever or whatever it is will have a major effect on the "emotion and physical story for next season," she said.

CBS is expected to make a decision on the future of "Supergirl" by May.
