After multiple reports of shootings reached authorities, Texas Rangers, local police officers, and Texas Parks and Wildlife began searching Concho County for the suspect. Around 6:15 a.m., authorities caught with the suspect, who was still in his pickup truck at the time.

Sheriff Richard Doane encountered the 23-year-old male on a highway north of Eden and the suspect opened fire, wounding him. The sheriff's injury was non-fatal, however, and he was also taken to San Angelo for treatment.

A highway patrol officer in the area and a game warden who came to assist Doane then encountered the suspect as well. The unnamed shooter was killed in the resulting shootout.

The man, said to be from North Carolina, had an assault rifle, a handgun, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his pickup truck. Authorities have not released his name until they notify his family, according to a statement.
