The Bible Supports Abortion, Liberal Christian Group Claims

Some progressive Christians have recently endorsed a controversial interpretation of a biblically-backed idea that involves abortion and the actual moment that life begins.

The liberal Christian blog The Christian Left recently claimed that the Bible did not forbid abortion and that God even stated when life actually began. Their claims, though, are brewing a growing controversy with the larger Christian community, who believes the progressive religious group is twisting passages of the Bible to support abortion.

The first passage that is used in this manner is taken from Genesis 2:7 – God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and it was then that the man became a living being."

Another passage that was used in this context was In Job 33:4, which states: "The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."

The progressive group claims that a human was not truly formed or "living" until the first breath entered his lungs and the child was able to breathe on his own.

Many religious leaders, however, maintain that life begins at the moment of conception, and state that just because a living form is within the uterus, that is no reason to consider the fetus as not living and subject to disposal.

The progressive philosophy also makes jumps to the conclusion that killing a living fetus is not the same as killing a living human being, ignoring the fact that a fetus has been proven to feel pain later in the pregnancy, as well as developing a beating heart.

Unfortunately, these progressive Christians are only talking about half of the issue, the unborn, and ignoring the other half – the effect abortion has on the mother.

A recently published study in Denmark shows that mortality rates are higher for women who have an abortion compared to women who undergo childbirth, which goes against the long-held belief that abortion is a safe alternative compared to childbirth.

The study, "Short and long term mortality rates associated with first pregnancy outcome: Population register based study for Denmark 1980–2004," was published by the Medical Science Monitor and reviewed the medical record of nearly half a million women in Denmark during that time period.

Researchers were able to complete their findings by comparing records from Denmark's fertility and abortion registries to the country's death registry records.

The results showed overall that women who underwent a first-trimester abortion had an 89 percent greater chance of dying within the first year and a staggering 80 percent greater risk of death during the entire time period examined.

"How can anyone make the case that we can tolerate [abortion] while we work with the candidate on 'social' programs? The heart of what is 'social' is that it respects the other person," Father Frank Pavone, president of Priests for Life, said during a pro-life rally.
