Charlemagne dies - January 28, 814
This week marks the anniversary of when notable Medieval monarch Charles the Great, commonly known as Charlemagne, passed away.
During his reign as Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne held a substantial military and intellectual influence on mainland Europe, and also aided in spreading Christianity through his conquests.
The year before he died, Charlemagne had his surviving son Louis the Pious crowned emperor. Charlemagne was buried at his palace at Aachen, in modern day Germany.
“When he died in 814, Charlemagne's empire encompassed much of Western Europe, and he had also ensured the survival of Christianity in the West. Today, Charlemagne is referred to by some as the father of Europe,” noted History.com.
