This week in Christian history: Bob Coy resigns; Pope Leo X triggers Reformation; Jesuits arrive in Brazil
Bob Coy resigns – April 3, 2014

This week marks the anniversary of Bob Coy's resignation as senior pastor of the Florida-based megachurch Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale due to a moral failing.
The former owner of an adult entertainment venue in Las Vegas, Nevada, Coy had become a born-again Christian in the 1980s and later helped to launch Calvary Chapel in 1985.
According to an official statement from church leadership issued shortly after his resignation, Coy confessed “to a moral failing in his life which disqualifies him from continuing his leadership role at the church.”
“The media ministry of the Active Word that distributes his Bible teachings through radio, television and digital media has also been suspended,” the church stated.
“Pastor Bob will be focusing his full attention on his personal relationship with God and with his family. The governing board of the church is providing counselors and ministers who will help guide him through the process of full repentance, cleansing and restoration.”
Later that month, Calvary Chapel Outreach Pastor Chet Lowe revealed in a sermon that the moral failing of Coy involved “adultery with more than one woman” and “sexual immorality, habitually, through pornography.”
