This week marks the anniversary of when Fenton John Anthony Hort, a biblical scholar, Cambridge professor and Bible translator, died at the age of 64.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hort worked alongside colleagues J. B. Lightfoot and B. E Westcott on matters of New Testament translation and textual criticism.

After 28 years of work, Hort and Westcott compiled The New Testament in the Original Greek, which was originally released in 1881 and continually used and debated into modern times.

According to the Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Hort had several works posthumously published, including Judaistic Christianity in 1894, The Christian Ecclesia in 1897, and a series of lectures from 1871 on the topic of philosophical theology.

“Hort's most influential work was his Introduction to The New Testament in the Original Greek (1882), wherein Hort detailed the critical principles that he and Westcott followed in making their edition of the Greek New Testament,” noted CCEL.

“Hort was more than a brilliant scholar — he was also an involved churchman. He was particularly interested in social issues and supported the work of E D. Maurice and Charles Kingsley, both leaders in the British social gospel movement. Nevertheless, Kingsley's own theological position was conservative.”
