This week marks the anniversary of the birth of one of the most influential theologians in Protestant Christianity.

John Calvin, whose name occasionally is also rendered Jean Cauvin, was born on July 10, 1509 in Noyon, France.

A lawyer by profession, Calvin was a renowned Protestant Reformer who championed the idea of predestination, or the theological idea that God had chosen all who would be saved without human input.
