Orthodox Presbyterian Church founder born – July 28, 1881

This week marks the anniversary of when John Gresham Machen, a scholar and theologian who helped to found the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, was born in Baltimore, Maryland.

Machen was an apologist for fundamentalist Christianity and originally opposed the liberalization of Princeton Seminary, where he served as an expert on the New Testament.

After leaving Princeton and being suspended from the ministry by the Presbyterian Church for his views, Machen helped to found the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.  

“He was arguably the most important conservative Protestant thinker of the first half of the 20th century and the guiding light for the first generation of Orthodox Presbyterians,” stated the OPC.
