A man convicted of killing 13-year-old Nina Louise Courtpatte on a golf course in Edmonton, Alberta, in 2005 claimed he identified as a woman. As The Toronto Sun reported in February 2020, Michael Williams was granted a transfer to Fraser Valley Women’s Institute in Abbotsford, British Columbia, but he was sent back to the men’s prison after he was caught having sex with female inmates.
The outlet reported that Williams wore a bra and a crop top as part of his identity as a woman, but he was still a “fully-intact male” and only took hormones two weeks out of the month so he could “maintain an erection.” Regarding the criteria for allowing a man to transfer to a women’s prison, the Toronto Sun reported that an inmate is only required to answer five questions.

According to Heather Mason, an incarcerated women's advocate, Williams’ “maladaptive behavior” was known, and his requests to be sent back to the women’s prison have been denied.
