Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Give First Statement About Divorce

Tom Cruise and soon to be ex-wife Katie Holmes have issued their first joint statement regarding their pending divorce. The couple has asked for privacy as they determine what is in their daughter's best interests.

"We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents," they said in a public statement.

While it is unknown what exactly led to the couple's separation, many have speculated that religious beliefs played a major part in Holmes' decision to file for divorce. Holmes was raised Catholic, while Cruise is one of the most well-known Scientologists.

As Suri comes of age, sources say that Holmes wanted to protect her daughter from indoctrination into the Church of Scientology and instead raise her away from the Church. Whether that means the two will start attending the Catholic Church remains to be seen.

For now, though, Suri is likely to stay with her mom, as Cruise will be traveling around the world to film back-to-back movies. Holmes has been busy hiring a new security team, moving into her own apartment, and spending time with her family ever since the announcement of divorce last week.

A source close to Cruise reported that he was fearful that Holmes "is trying to cut him out of their daughter's life. Tom won't tolerate it and told his lawyers that if he personally needs to go to court and make a plea in front of the judge for an order allowing him to see his daughter, he will," the source told Radar Online.

Thankfully, it appears as though the couple is "working together" and putting Suri ahead of their own interests. One report states that Cruise will be able to see his daughter in a matter of days, but she will be staying with Holmes while he works.
