Toronto News: Self-Confessed 'Witches' Claim Resurgence of Practice Due to Oppression

Some self-confessed witchcraft practitioners in Toronto, Canada claim that the resurgence of the belief in the practice is due to the oppression many people experience.

The supposed witches in Toronto are expected to take part in the month-long event called "Out of the Broom Closet" this month. After all, the federal government already decriminalized witchcraft a few months ago, and there is no more stopping from the supposed witches to hide and not to join in the gathering and celebration.

According to Monica Bodirsky, organizer of the "Out of the Broom Closet" event, October is the season of the witch. While repealing the law that banned witchcraft in Toronto in the past will encourage more witchcraft practitioners to come out in the open as they partake in the said event, Bodirsky believes that more women are embracing the practice to protect themselves.

"I think witchcraft is especially relevant right now considering the absolute abuses of power we see with current world leadership. We see witches using their power to protect themselves against oppressors and resisting a so-called domesticity imposed by those who are frightened of women in positions of authority," opined Bodirsky in an interview with the Torontoist.

Sabrina Scott, a Toronto-based witch, agrees with Bodirsky. However, Scott laments the fact that, while witchcraft is a form of resistance, it is not about light and love only. After all, Scott believes that resistance is also about leveling the playing field, too.

Toronto artist and conjurer Cassandra Thompson believes that people, especially those in the marginalized sector, resort to witchcraft for self-preservation. For Thompson, witchcraft is the only way for some people to protect themselves when they are pushed against the wall.

"How else are people going to win a war against people with guns? When you have no armour, you need magic," Thompson said.
