'Treasure Life' Event Honors Pro-Life Heroes at Republican National Convention

Phyllis Schlafly, founder of Eagle Forum, and Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, hosted a Tuesday event during the Republican National Convention honoring Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), Rep. Louie Gohmert (Texas), Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum for their advocacy for the unborn.

Three of the honorees, Bachmann, Perry and Santorum, were Republican presidential candidates this election season.

The event was held at the Florida Aquarium. Attendees were able to view the exhibits prior to the presentations. Each of the honorees spoke about protecting the unborn and ending abortion as sting rays and white spotted bamboo sharks splashed in a nearby pool.

The speakers also took the opportunity to criticize President Barack Obama's pro-choice position.

"I love how the left and this president talk about inclusion as they advocate the discarding and destruction of over one million children every year. Some inclusion," Santorum said.

Bachmann also criticized the Obama administration's requirement that employers, including most religious employers, provide health insurance coverage for contraception, sterilization and some abortifacient drugs.

"Never before have we seen a denial of our religious liberties. When President Obama told the Catholic Church they had to deny their sincerely held religious beliefs and take on his beliefs, that's not what our system of government is, that's not pro-life," Bachmann said.

The event was held on Schlafly's birthday. At the end of the event, a multi-tiered birthday cake was brought out as everyone sang "Happy Birthday."

"The cake is real," Perkins explained, and the attendees were offered a slice before they left.
