Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser called the extension “an inexplicable slap in the face to the pro-life GOP base,” citing a recent poll that found 75% of GOP voters support defunding Planned Parenthood.

According to the nationwide survey, conducted by Cygnal from Feb. 8-10, 32% of GOP voters said they will have “decreased enthusiasm” for voting in the midterm general election if Republican leaders weaken or abandon policies against abortion.

“Funding Planned Parenthood means propping up a business whose main purpose is to end the lives of innocent unborn children,” Dannenfelser said in a Tuesday statement.

“This is a clear abandonment as the first Trump administration enacted the Protect Life Rule to stop Title X funding of Planned Parenthood,” she continued. “It should have been [a] ‘Day One’ policy in the second administration. Instead, we are 14 months in, and this hasn’t been prevented.”

The pro-life leader criticized the federal government for continuing to allow the shipment of abortion drugs across state lines, including places that have passed laws against abortion.

Dannenfelser also recalled President Donald Trump’s suggestion earlier this year that Republicans should be “flexible” on the Hyde Amendment, a legislative provision that has been attached to spending bills since the 1970s that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for most abortions. The president’s statement sparked backlash from various Christian leaders and pro-life advocates, including Dannenfelser.

“This spells disaster for November. SBA’s field team is in the top battlegrounds, working every day to communicate with voters unlikely to vote if they aren’t motivated,” Dannenfelser said. “This undermines their work and amounts to political suicide. Enough is enough.”
