4. First Asian-American Director of the Peace Corps

A decade before she became the first Asian-American woman in a presidential cabinet, Chao had another milestone as the first Asian-American director of the Peace Corps.

A Peace Corps press release celebrating Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month credits Chao as being the first, her tenure going from 1991-1992.

"Chao can be credited with many institutional improvements including the initiation of Peace Corps programs in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, after the fall of the Soviet Union," noted the Peace Corps.
