Trump's week in review: From the Epstein Files release to his meeting with Mamdani
4. Trump calls for arrest of Democratic lawmakers who encourage the military to disobey his orders
In a Truth Social post Thursday, Trump reacted to a Washington Examiner article with the headline “Democratic veterans in Congress urge service members to refuse unspecified unlawful orders” by accusing the lawmakers of engaging in “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL.”
According to Trump, “Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand — We won’t have a Country anymore!!! An example must be set.”
On Tuesday, Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., posted a video on her X account showing her, along with Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., Rep. Chris DeLuzio, D-Pa., Rep. Maggie Goodlander, D-N.H., Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., and Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., delivering a message to members of the military and the intelligence community. The lawmakers featured in the video all have experience serving in the U.S. armed forces or the intelligence community.
“This administration is pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens,” the lawmakers insisted as they finished each other’s sentences. After noting that military and intelligence professionals took an oath to “protect and defend this Constitution,” the video warned that “the threats to our Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad but from right here at home.”
The video concluded with the lawmakers assuring military and government intelligence employees: “You can refuse illegal orders," and “no one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our Constitution.” Lawmakers also pleaded with military and intelligence staff, saying, “We need you stand up for our laws, our Constitution and who we are as Americans,” concluding with “Don’t give up the ship.”
In a subsequent Truth Social post, Trump reiterated his insistence that the video featured “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS,” suggesting that he should “LOCK THEM UP.” Another Truth Social post featured Trump contending that the lawmakers engaged in “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!”
