This will then lead to the character's death on the series in order to make way for his leave. It was said that fans of "Vikings" will mourn the loss of the popular character. With that, there are already theories on how the king will die. One speculation stated that Alexander Ludwig's character Bjorn Ironside, who is the firstborn son of the king, could overthrow his own father. Another speculation is that the king will die because of a disease or an injury.

In addition, his departure begs the question of who will take on the throne after his death. Bjorn's brother Ivor is expected to bring conflict to Bjorn's right to take on the throne. Because Bjorn has been through many challenges, it was said that Ivor will not think that Bjorn is fit to rule the kingdom.

Meanwhile, the executive producer of the series Michael Hirst spoke out about not having the king present in the series during an interview with Hollywood Reporter. He said, " I've always seen Vikings without Ragnar. I thought it was very important when I started thinking about this whole thing that Ragnar had many sons and some of his sons became more famous than he was. So I can perfectly well envision a world without Ragnar and further adventures for the sons. Absolutely. That's something I really, really want to do."

"Vikings" season 4 is expected to premiere in February 2016.
