'Wonder Woman' news, cast, spoilers: Movie to film in Italy; 'Interstellar' cinematographer joins production
DC movies are about to take over next year. With Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" all set to kick off in 2016, and will be soon followed by David Ayer's "Suicide Squad," which just finished filming a week ago.
DC will now be focusing on its third film expanding the DC Cinematic Universe with "Wonder Woman." Although fans will already see the female superhero in Batman v Superman as her alter-ego, Diana Prince, is introduced, this movie will be the character's first feature film.
The movie will start shooting in a few months, and at this time, DC is already gathering the best names in the industry to make sure that they do not miss one little detail. Crirtically acclaimed director Patty Jenkins ("Monster") will lead the movie alongside Oscar-winner Bill Westenhofer ("Life of Pi") for the visual effects. However, according to Screen Rant, another addition made the production more impressive, as cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema had just been confirmed to be on board the film.
Aside from starting with small but applauded films like "Let the Right One In," Hoytema recently started to be involved with big productions such as being director of photography for Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" and cinematographer for Sam Mendes' second James Bond movie "Spectre."
More about the plot, Wonder Woman is said to tell the origins of the Amazonian warrior superhero. Yahoo! Italy reported that the movie will be partly filmed in Basilicata, Italy, which would make sense because of its ancient architecture and regions (such as Matera). It is said that it may be the possible setting for Wonder Woman's home island, Themyscira. Aside from this speculation, the place may also serve as a location for some WWI or WWII scenes since the studios did release photos before of the female superhero seemingly fighting off World War soldiers.
A lot of details haven't been polished yet for now, but they are definitely expected to be molded in the coming months as Wonder Woman is set to be released on June 23, 2017.
