Amtrak Train Derails: Chicago to Pontiac Route Derailment Causes Delays, Injuries Update

An Amtrak train has derailed while traveling from Chicago to Pontiac, Mich.

The train had 178 people on board when it derailed, according to reports. The accident happened just two miles east of Niles, Mich.

According to Amtrak, no life-threatening injuries have been reported yet.

The derailed train was the Amtrak Wolverine Service Train 350, and the incident took place at about 9.10 a.m. Chicago time, according to the press release from Amtrak.

Of the 178 people on board, 174 were passengers and four were Amtrak employees, according to reports.

A number of injuries have been reported, although as Amtrak has reported, none are thought to be life threatening at this time. Amtrak has said that about a dozen people have been taken to nearby hospitals in the local area for further treatment and analysis.

As of Sunday afternoon Amtrak has said that all passengers and staff have been evacuated from the wreckage and taken away.

Amtrak will be investigating the incident to determine the cause of the derailment.

Amtrak has also reported that it is already putting arrangements in place to provide alternative modes of transportation for regular passengers of the Train 350, as well as other trains and routes that have been disrupted by the derailment.

Refunds are also being given for those who have paid for tickets but have been unable to travel due to the delays from the derailment.
