Apple Will Still Release a 4-Inch iPhone in March/April, But Not the Fake 'iPhone 6c' Leak

A previous report said Apple is getting ready for a smaller version of the iPhone 6s, a device dubbed "iPhone 6c." However, a recent report challenges this claim by saying that the iPhone 6c leak is a fake.

On Thursday, Jan. 21, M.I.C. Gadget leaked a video (below) of a device it said is a Foxconn demo unit of the 4-inch iPhone 2016. Design-wise, the leaked device is similar to the iPhone 6s, albeit smaller.

TechCrunch, which reported on the leak, said the new device is another indication of how Apple has changed throughout the years. The report said that the purported iPhone 6c is part of the company's new strategy to put an iPhone in every consumer's hands. Specifically, the leaked device should cater to those looking for an iPhone with a smaller screen.

However, Apple-centric publication 9to5Mac says this leak is a "fake," according to its sources "who have used the upcoming iPhone with a 4-inch display." Apple will not be releasing an iPhone 6c or iPhone 6s Mini, but instead will upgrade its iPhone 5s that was first released in 2013.

The publication says the new device is being called "N69" internally and will be released as "iPhone 5se." Its sources say the suffix either denotes a "special edition" of the 4-inch iPhone screen size and as an "enhanced" version of the iPhone 5s.

The sources also provided the following list features for the iPhone 5se:

  • The chamfered, shiny edges replaced with curved glass like on the iPhone 6 and 6s lines
  • The same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera systems from the iPhone 6
  • Support for larger panoramas and autofocus for video recording
  • Barometer for tracking elevation in the Health app
  • An NFC chip for Apple Pay
  • The A8 and M8 chips from the iPhone 6
  • Bluetooth 4.2, VoLTE, and 802.11ac WiFi chips from the iPhone 6s
  • Live Photos from the iPhone 6s
  • Same Silver, Space Gray, Gold, and Rose Gold color options as the 6s line

Sources say further that the iPhone 5se is currently in production and will be introduced in March with a release date in late March or early April as a replacement to the iPhone 5s.

Apple has not confirmed any of these new information as of press time, however.
