The 67-year-old author teased that the book series is a universe that is as expansive and diverse as the Marvel and DC comic book universes. But he added that compared to Marvel and DC, the sci-fi book series is considerably more realistic, consistent and somewhat grittier.

Martin disclosed that the first volume of the "Wild Cards" was released in 1986 and as of press time, the series already has 22 volumes. He added that he still unsure about the stories that will be adapted and the characters that will be featured in the upcoming television series.

Will 'Wild Cards' be Like 'Game of Thrones'?

Unlike "Game of Thrones," per Telegraph, Martin is not the sole writer of "Wild Cards." The series of books that combines superhero and dystopian themes are penned by more than 30 writers. Despite having different authors, all stories in the book series are set in a similar world.

Martin is involved in the "Wild Cards" book series as one of the editors, as well as a story contributor to some books. The popular novelist will not be personally involved in the production of the incoming television adaptation as he wanted to focus on his incoming novels.

Plot Details of The TV Adaptation

The series of books is set in an alternate reality in 1946, according to wildcardsonline.com. A DNA-altering alien virus was released on the Earth and has wiped out almost all human lives.

As an aftermath, some survivors of the catastrophe called the "Jokers" ended up having hideously deformed figures. On the other hand, there was a tiny percentage called the "Aces" who developed superpowers such as super-strength, flight, sun beam shooting fingertips and mind-reading.

Some stories of the series were already adapted into graphic novel form. It also branched out into a role playing game called "Superworld."
