A George R. R. Martin book will hit bookshelves in the next few days. Unfortunately, it is not the highly anticipated "The Winds of Winter" (TWOW). The new venture is an illustrated anniversary hardcover edition of 'A Game of Thrones" (GOT), the novel that started the epic fantasy series "A Song of Ice and Fire" (ASOIAF).
GOT Anniversary Edition
GRRM wrote on his online journal that the first book's 20th anniversary edition will come to bookstores and online booksellers on Oct. 18. He said he just finished signing some of the copies, which will go on sale at the Jean Cocteau Cinema (JCC) Bookstore.
The 68-year-old bestselling author disclosed that the autographed copies will not have personalization or inscriptions, but just straight signatures. The special deluxe edition hardcover will be sold at $60. To preorder, fans may visit JCC online.
Martin first announced the release of the illustrated edition in August, in time for the 20th anniversary of the freshman novel originally published on Aug. 1, 1996. The book contains 73 black and white interior illustrations, and eight full color artworks from an all-star roster of fantasy illustrators.
Special Boxed GOT 20th Anniversary Editions
In addition to the autographed copies of the deluxe edition hardcover, GRRM announced on his journal that the 20th anniversary edition will also come in three box editions. These box editions will not only contain a fully illustrated and leather bound book, but also handpicked items in wooden display box.
The Special Edition ($75) contains exclusive HBO GOT t-shirt, reproduction of Robert Baratheon's Will, Living Language Dothraki online course and Iron Coin of the Faceless Man.
The Limited Edition ($200) comes with the box contents of the Special Edition, along with Dead Man Set of coins, exclusive GOT card game and holiday shield lights. It also contains Jon Snow and Daenerys' miniatures, Maester's journal, silk map and keepsake printed box with GRRM insignia.
Moreover, the Ultra Limited Edition ($600) possesses the contents of the Special and Limited Editions, with an added Silver Stag coin. It will also have an exclusive velvet-lined, fire-torched wood box engraved with GRRM insignia. To preorder, visit the box editions' website.
How About TWOW?
The release date of TWOW has been a guessing game to fans for a long time. In the past months, none of the rumors about the sixth book's publication date turned out to be true. Martin also remained elusive about the progress out of the book.
But just because the book is not yet coming out does not mean it is already late. According to a projection made by Christopher Ingraham of The Washington Post, the sixth novel will most likely come out in 2017, while the seventh novel "A Dream of Spring" will hit bookshelves in 2023. He generated his estimates by using geometry based on Martin's pace as an author and on the book's expected number of pages.
