4 reactions to Joshua Butler's resignation as pastor of Arizona church

In response to the backlash, author Jake Meador warned of the consequences of allowing public opinion to silence theological expression, however wrong or misguided.

Meador tweeted: "The reason neo-fundamentalists & prog evangelicals keep swarming, harassing, and slandering people is simple: It keeps working. If it works, why would they stop? If you want them to stop, ignore them. As long as our leaders lack the courage to do this, it will keep happening."

Meador also pointed to the effectiveness of the campaign to "cancel" Butler, tweeting:  "This pressure worked on TGC w/ Butler. It worked on Pierre and Villodas w/ Butler. (And then Barna turned around and put Villodas on a podcast about resilience!)

"As long as it works, the bullies will keep bullying. You have to ignore them."
