The Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., speaks about his relationship with Dr. Ralph D. Winter during a memorial service at Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena, Calif., on Sunday, June 28, 2009.

Warren, whose network of pastors spans over 160 countries, is expected to speak during the main session of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)’s 46th annual convention, which has as its theme “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

“Considered the cornerstone of the convention, the Saturday Evening Main Session is not to be missed,” organizers state in the program for the four-day convention, which starts Friday.

“Prominent, sought after scholars will address the theme of the convention at large,” they add. “The session is both relevant and meaningful to Islam in North America.”

Since Sayyid Syeed, a longtime leader with ISNA who focuses on building the organization's interfaith ties, invited Warren to speak during a White House gathering they attended last year, the Southern California pastor has refrained from making any public comments regarding the invitation.

But Syeed told The Indianapolis Star, the largest newspaper in Indiana, where ISNA is based, that Warren “realizes that it is equally critical for him to work with people of other faiths."

Syeed has also noted that he and Warren have worked together on projects fighting malaria and advocating for people with HIV and AIDS.

Aside from leading one of the most prominent churches in America, Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., Warren has spearheaded a number of other movements, such as the P.E.A.C.E. Plan, a massive effort to mobilize Christians around the world into an outreach effort to attack the five “global giants” of poverty, disease, spiritual emptiness, self-serving leadership, and illiteracy. His global alliance of pastors, the Purpose Driven Network, meanwhile spans 162 countries and hundreds of denominations.

The Islamic Society, an umbrella association for tens of thousands of Muslims, has reportedly worked for years to persuade leaders of other faiths to attend its convention – a massive family reunion that draws about 30,000 people.

This year’s ISNA convention will be held at the Washington DC Convention Center and will feature some 300 speakers, including Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.

ISNA is also hoping for a special appearance by President Obama, whose recent speech in Cairo “highlighted the importance of [outreach to the Muslim American community] in the current administration," according to convention organizers.

The Islamic Society says the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Justice will be among the agencies represented during a session Saturday on “Government Outreach to the Muslim American Community.”

The convention will conclude Monday night.

"After reading these comments, Jesus must be proud of His family. Nothing like a bunch of religious judgmental people casting judgement. "

...would you be a bit more specific about what you are speaking of specifically? It's not that I disagree with what you posted...I just want to know what "judgement"s you're talking about.

    Thanks.

I'm so glad God didn't consult you guys when He decided to die for the sins of the world, the enemies of God. Way to show love and community, keep up the good work!

"Listen (online..35 minutes) to Pastor Warren speaking at the Muslim convention in 2008. Did he preach the gospel or plant seed into the heart of those thousands there of the Truth of Jesus (in a loving way)????

    Nope!"

Jesus did a whole lot of what Warren is doing with the Muslims. Those people need to see Christians as human beings before they will even consider listening to the gospel. Apparently, you may need to learn a bit about evangelizing the Muslim world. It's VERY slow work that can take decades of work to begin to see anyone come to Christ.

Some evangelism works like a microwave. Some evangelism works like a slow cooker and still some work like a smoker. You don't use a microwave to make BBQ ribs. Some cooking takes great patience and time. Jesus spent 33 years before the Gospel was even possible....

The New Testmant says that we are to judge righteous judgment. We are to judge what people say...so that we don't swallow stuff that doesn't line up with the Word of God.

Old Testament prophets exposed wrong behavior and teaching. If you love people then you will expose wrong.

    Nope!

Talked of his peace plan...all faiths coming together to wipe out the ills of mankind. So, at what point is the message of salvation preached? How do we preach it walking hand in hand with Muslims? Are they going to let us...??? Or will there need to be equal time? We will wipe out hunger and aides in the name of both Jesus and Allah?

What is the purpose of the church? Is it to unite all faiths for the purpose of solving the problems of the world? Is to to make sure everyone is civil (as Pastor Warren talked about at his last address to a Muslim convention in 2008) in their dealings with each other?

Jesus left us the "Great Commission" (or the Great Purpose of the Church) when He ascended into heaven and said "Go ye therefore and preach the gospel, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things, whatever I have commanded you."

There seems to be much debate on this subject....read your Bible...then you decide.

"And for all of you who accuse Dr. Warren of fellowshiping with darkness, remember how he prayed in Jesus's name at the presidential inauguration. It took guts to stand up for Christ in that setting."

The last time I looked at our Pledge of Allegiance, it still reads that we are One Nation, Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

Aside of the fact that we may need a reminder of who God is, I don't understand why it would have taken any guts for Warren or any Christian to stand up for Christ in the inaugural setting. That would be a given.

But before Muslims, yes, and the Holy Spirit had better be with you. If God has opened the door, then who are we to close it.

Apparently you are not familiar with what Saddleback teaches. You can go to their website and find out. It may be helpful before making such statements. :D

    http://saddleback.com/aboutsaddleback/whatwebelieve/index.html

The problem comes in with people of "high understanding" not comprehending bringing the gospel to the world. The gospels record it this way:

Mat 9:11 When the Pharisees saw {this,} they said to His disciples, "Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?"

Need to withhold judgment. We don't know what he's going to say. This is an opportunity with much potential, but to bear fruit it must be handled with Godly wisdom. We need to make inroads into the Muslim community and open them up to the Gospel, and that begins by stressing the need for freedom of conscience and expression. There is no coercion in religion.

Perhaps then the message will filter back to their home countries and help open them up to the Gospel.

It's must not be a matter of denying beliefs and smoothing over differences. It must be a question of acknowledging differences but respecting those who believe differently than we do. As Paul did at the Areopagus.

The Kingdom moves forward. I pray that RW has God's anointing to say the right things in the right spirit.

Back in the 90's, I worked with one of the imams who converted Mike Tyson to Islam. I also worked with radical Shiites in Beirut. In each case, I shared and debated Christian theology with them. Does my association with these people debase my faith and status in the Lord? I think not. Lighten up folks, at least Warren has gained the respect of this extremely hard group to engage (the Islamic leaders) to the extent that he will speak at a major conference. Please pray for his communications while you are condemning his participation.

What part of dying daily and following Jesus does Mr. Warren not understand? He needs to die to his worldly desire for worldwide popularity among false religions and follow the example of Jesus who, when He told the Jewish Leaders just how SINFUL (sons of Satan!) they were, they attempted to kill Him. Amen?

One thing that that most forget when there is the multi-faith encounter, is that Jesus never left them the way He found them. Even though He ate, visited, shared, with the sinners, and others, He never joined in their lifestyle, He always confromted sin and the sinners were given the Gospel, and told the truth: He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes unto the Father but by Him. He allows no other to usurp His Position and His Office-the Redeemer of His people.
So to jon in with those of other faiths and persuastions, and do not confront and bring to the knowledge of the Truth, Christ Jesus, they are just abiding in the sin of the others. It does no good just to fratinize, and have conferences, and joint endeavors, if the Truth is never broached. They, the others, will just grow more secure in their lost condition, because they are not challenged to see their error.
Think of Zacheus, who when faced with the situation that Jesus brought to him, repented, repaid, and forsook his way of sinning. Can anyone who is in a position of dealing with the errors of false religions and teachings do otherwise? To be welcomed by these false teachers, leaders, and others who never are confronted whith their sinful conditon, shows that there is no validity to the endeavor. Warren needs to teach the Truth, confront error, correct false teachings, and then see how welcome he would be at these conferences! I bet not much. Birds of a feather flock together. The apple falls not far from the tree. Chip off the old block, so to speak!
So it does no good to socialize those who are destined to death, but much better to warn and pull from the flames of Hell! Though, it will cost much, maybe even the very life of the speaker who tells the truth. But it is the only way to follow Christ!

    God bless Rick Warren!

He is doing what the Word says: Do good to all men, especially those of the household of faith.

Christ admonished us to let our lights shine before all men. Dr. Warren is showing God's love by workng with the unsevd to feed the world-and be the hands and feet of Christ.

Muslim or not, unsaved is unsaved. We do good to our non-Christian neighbors. And while I wholeheartedly support our just wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Muslims are our neighbors, too. They deserve to see God's work in action.

And for all of you who accuse Dr. Warren of fellowshiping with darkness, remember how he prayed in Jesus's name at the presidential inauguration. It took guts to stand up for Christ in that setting.

Those who fellowship with darkness do not stand up for Jesus in such a bold manner.

i would like to know where some people get off saying any sort of judgement between Christians in the context of following the word is wrong. does it not say in Corinthians 5:12,13 to judge those inside the church? who cares about those outside. they're lost as it is. let God deal with them as it says in verse 13 of the quoted verses.

How many Muslims read their "Holy Quran"? Have they
ever read the virgin birth of Jesus Christ in their
Holy Book. Well, Pastor Rick Warren can quote from
"Quran" and deliver the gospel of Christ. Every year,
6 million Muslims are coming to follow Christ in Asia
and Africa, let that fire of revival may start in
Washington, D.C. With God all things are possible, and
God loves all and gave His Son for the whole world.

    shelbyjp30,

No, we are not all children of God. You become a child of God when you repent, believe in Jesus that he paid your sin debt and was raised from the dead. Only then are you adopted into the family. Until that time your father is Satan in this world. This is why sharing the truth about Jesus and salvation is so important.

Christians today want to live like the world and misapply the scripture about judging because they would be condemned. That was about being a hypocrite and judging others on the same things you do. As a follower of Christ you are to discern spiritual truth. Did Jesus go into the temple and preach a feel good message for everyone to get along including the Pharisees? Or did he tell the truth about the religious leaders of Israel?

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:36 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 1

Christianity or being a Christian is defined as claiming Jesus Christ as your saviour. He will be your advocate when judgement day comes. Your job is to follow his example. Help your neighbor, keep the commandments, read the scriptures, preach and spread the gospel and invite other people to come unto Christ. Do you remember when some apostles could not heal a person and became jealous of someone who used Jesus name? The savior said that if they are not against us, they are with us. As simple as that. Faith is a personal manifestation. It is a personal thing. what religion did adam belong? what about abraham? Isaac? Jacob? Or even better, what was Jesus' religion? There should be not contention among you if you believe that Jesus is your savior. Humble yourselves and be more helpful to your neighbor. That includes muslims or people of other faiths..That's right. They are children of God too. Be a doer in your community. Help the needy. Excercise your diligence instead of saying bad stuff. Volunteer. God's work is accomplished much faster if theres less talk.

And I dont have a problem so much with Mr Obama or Mr. Warren speaking to the Muslim nation but what I do have a MAJOR problem with is Mr. Obama speaking from the Quran (and very passionatly I might add). Then you have him on youtube where Mr. Obama speaks "very sarcastically" from the Holy Bible. THAT'S what I have a problem with. Now, I could have understood if he had gone to solely talk politics/government issues (and NOT talk about their faith or read from the Quran) but that's not what he did! I have come to realize that we need to pray for TRUE DISCERNMENT in these crazy times. And we must never forget that satan is very very very clever, so, dont be easily deceived, Believer's!!!

People need to learn the difference between "giving an opinion" and "judging someone"... And we need to continue to pray for ALL believer's of Christ Jesus around the world to have to the utmost courage to stand up for what is right in this spiritually broke world...

zhwa2k, perhaps you misunderstood my comments and although I do believe Mr. Warren should be ready "in season and out of season" to preach the gospel, even in a situation like this, I did also mentioned "Let us pray for Rick Warren to have the dedication and conviction to bring the Message of Salvation to these people. Yet standing firm on the principles of God's Word and not wavering or compromising for anyone! Yet having these convictions balanced out by the compassion of Christ to the lost! A fine line he must walk, may the Lord bless him with guidance, wisdom and discernment as to walk in a circumspectly manner that will reveal Jesus Christ as his and the ONLY Savior of mankind!"

We should balance out our witnessing for Christ with gentleness and and respect (1 Peter 3:15) and be "wise as a serpent yet gentle as a dove" (Matthew 10:16). But we also must be obiedent to what the Lord has called us to do in any given circumstance. I am not so nieve to think nor agree with Mr. Warren nor anyone else walking into this situation with their "Gospel Guns ablazing" situations like this must require prayer, guidance, grace and wisdom so that Jesus is very much shown as Savior but done with grace, love and respect. After all, we are to show love towards everyone, Christ's love at that.
When we choose not to share the message of Salvation for the sake of P.C. and not stepping on toes, we run the risk of, if not have already preached a watered down gospel in which there is no light to shine in the dark. That very light is what brings people to the realization of their sin and ultimately to the feet of Jesus. John 3:20-"For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed."

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:04 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

We are all called to discern the Lord's will for our lives by careful prayer and study in the Word. After all, Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall make your paths straight." This decision is definitely a personal one for Mr. Warren and while it is easy for us to debate over what he should do, I think that's where we most easily fall into the trap of judging without our ever realizing it. The best thing we can do as Christians is stop analyzing Mr. Warren's decisions (future or otherwise) and start praying for God to direct him in the right way, make his path abundantly clear, and give him the strength to act solidly on what he knows God is leading him to do.

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:58 pm Agree: 7   Disagree: 3

Islam teaches that Jesus wasn't crucified because Allah changed Judas Iscariot to appear like Jesus so he could be crucified in his place. Islam is heresy that denies the deity of Christ Jesus, his crucifixion, and his rising from the dead. Islam distorts the whole message of salvation earning its members eternal separation from God. I don't see why a Christian leader would participate with such a group and lend credibility to them by association. The problem with the church in the world is they've lost touch with the truth. All this acceptance of other cults is just helping the misled feel better about their wrong choice which has eternal consequences.

I'm afraid that the worldview portrayed so clearly by BDawgC is what dooms our relations with the Muslim world to failure. The problem with all major religions is the fundamentalists in each. The people who feel like we must condemn the other, whether "in love" or not. I think it is a great thing that Rick Warren is speaking at this convention, and the biggest mistake he could make, the one that, sadly, most evangelicals like BDawg would hope he makes, is to stand up there and give them the ol' "what for" and lecture the crowd on the superiority of the Christian religion. Everyone there knows that Warren, by default, favors Christianity. The knucklehead approach, favored by the Neanderthal Right, would have him walk into this group that took a risk to invite him (can you imagine an imam addressing the Southern Baptist Convention?) and repay that honor with a polarizing lecture about the wonders of Christianity vs. the evils of Islam. Here's one Christian who hopes Warren has the good sense to be a guest in their houseâ

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 9:54 am Agree: 3   Disagree: 0

Wow.. I have mixed feelings about this.. Part of me is glad to see that a Christan speaker has an opportunity to speak before those who for the most part directly opposed the Christian Faith.. I hope that Mr. Warred DOES take this opportunity to share the Gospel truth with the Muslim attendees as that is the ONLY thing that that will save their souls; NOT "inter-faith cooperation" towards bettering this world.

But then part of me is weary as how should a Christian approach this.. Should we take the stance of what artm said about "What fellowship has light with darkness."? BUT if The LORD has placed Mr. Warren in this situation to spread his message of hope to the unbelievers, who are we to judge? I guess all we can do is pray that God would press upon Mr. Warren's heart to stand firm on the foundation of the Gospel of Christ and proclaim this Gospel bodly to those at this conference! After all, we must love even our enemies and pray for them. The way we handle opposition from others may be the only light of Christ those who are against us see. For should they see Christ through us as someone who hates, is unloving and cruel? No. The should see Christ through us as a Loving Savior whose arms are open to ALL people. After all, we are His hands and feet. Now its up to those of us (Mr. Warren) to handle an opportunity like this in a Christ like manner zealously proclaiming The Lord Jesus Christ as the ONLY way to eternal heaven to those who place their trust in other means of salvation!

Let us pray for Rick Warren to have the dedication and conviction to bring the Message of Salvation to these people. Yet standing firm on the principles of God's Word and not wavering or compromising for anyone! Yet having these convictions balanced out by the compassion of Christ to the lost! A fine line he must walk, may the Lord bless him with guidance, wisdom and discernment as to walk in a circumspectly manner that will reveal Jesus Christ as his and the ONLY Savior of mankind!

    God Bless!
