2. 'A Great Awakening' (in theaters April 3)
From Sight & Sound, the historical drama “A Great Awakening” arrives in theaters just ahead of Easter, exploring the spiritual roots of America through the unlikely friendship between evangelist George Whitefield and Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. The film emphasizes a biblical understanding of liberty, reminding viewers that true freedom comes through Christ.
The project highlights how spiritual revival preceded political revolution, with filmmakers pointing to parallels between the divisions of the 18th century and today’s cultural climate. As one central theme suggests, “Before the American Revolution, there was a revelation.”
“The biblical definition of liberty,” Sight & Sound President Josh Enck told CP, “is that blood was already shed for us, freedom from sin so that we can serve the Lord freely. This film doesn’t shy away from the Gospel. We don’t soft-shoe anything.”
“We show the flaws of Ben Franklin. We show the flaws of George Whitefield,” Enck said. “God uses imperfect leaders to transform the world. That’s what happened in the Great Awakening.”
