This week marks the anniversary of when D. James Kennedy, notable conservative activist and long-serving senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Florida, died at age 76.

Kennedy served as lead pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian for nearly 50 years, and also founded the multimedia organization Coral Ridge Ministries and the group Evangelism Explosion.

The previous December, Kennedy had a cardiac arrest and continued to have complications, which led him to officially retire from the pulpit less than two weeks before his death.

"There are all kinds of wonderful things I could say about my dad," said daughter Jennifer Kennedy Cassidy in a statement announcing his death in 2007.

"But one that stands out is his fine example. He 'walked the walk' and 'practiced what he preached.' His work for Christ is lasting – it will go on and on and make a difference for eternity."
