$10 Internet Offered by Comcast

Comcast will launch a new program that will offer discounted Internet and computers to families on low-income, according to Mashable.

The Cable and Internet provider is set to launch a new program called “Internet Essentials”. According to a blog created by the company it has announced that it will “provide low-cost access to the Internet and affordable computers as well as digital literacy training to families with children who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program.”

It has been touted that the special low-income plan will cost just $9.95 pre-tax, and will offer download speeds of 1.5 Mbps.

Comcast currently operates in 39 states across the U.S.. It will offer the service to new customer families that have at least one child receiving free school lunches via the National School Lunch Program.

The eligible families will also have the chance to purchase a “netbook-style laptop” for just $149.99 pre-tax. The netbook will have Wi-Fi capabilities and will also use the Windows 7 Starter operating system.

The program will accept new customers for "three full school years," according to the product's FAQ page.

The new initiative is a byproduct from the merger between Comcast and NBC, according to Mashable. During that merger the company as part of its conditions to the merger was made to agree to “increase broadband deployment in low income households.”
