Not long after Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president in 2015, the Facebook group The Other 98% posted a photo meme purporting to quote a 1998 interview Trump did with People Magazine.

Meant to be a smear of both Republican Primary voters and conservative information outlets like Fox News, Factcheck.org was one of many sites to debunk the meme.

"We scoured the People magazine archives and found nothing like this quote in 1998 or any other year," noted the site back in November 2015.

"And a public relations representative with People told us that the magazine couldn't find anything like that quote in its archives, either."
