United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said he is "deeply saddened" by the news of Abe's "horrific" assassination.

"I had the privilege of knowing him for years & will always remember his collegiality & commitment to multilateralism," Guterres noted in a statement on Twitter.

"My condolences to his family, and the people & Government of Japan."
