4. Advocating for Gay Marriage

In 2012, right after North Carolina voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, Obama became the first sitting president to endorse same-sex marriage.

Yet this was not the only action Obama did as president to support the cause. He also ordered his Justice Department to halt their legal defense of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

When the United States Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in June 2015 to legalize gay marriage nationwide, Obama had the White House lit up in rainbow colors.
