3 things to know about AI 'godbots’

2. Chatbots: It's OK to kill 'in the name of God'

Researchers also found disturbing instances in which so-called godbots justified violence, including murder.

Adam James Fenton, assistant professor at the Centre for Peace and Security at Coventry University, told The Conversation that they found some bots replied positively when users asked whether it was acceptable to kill or commit acts of violence.

In one case, Fenton reportedly said the chatbots said murder could actually be “your duty in certain circumstances.”

“There were chatbots that were saying that it’s justifiable in certain cases to commit acts of violence,” he was quoted as saying. “So, if people were asking questions like: ‘is it OK to kill, or is it OK to commit an act of violence?,’ the chatbot was giving answers saying, well, ‘if it’s your duty in certain circumstances, yes, that would be OK.’ That’s worrying, because it comes speaking ‘in the name of God’.”
