4 highlights from 'Melania' documentary about the first lady and her family
1. Melania Trump’s grief over her mother’s death

Melania Trump opened up about grieving the loss of her mother, Amalija Knavs, who died in January 2024.
The documentary describes how the first lady couldn’t help but think of her mother when she attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Jan. 9, 2025, which took place one year to the day after Knavs’ death, as Business Insider reports.
"Grief comes in waves when you lose someone who means so much to you. I will be sitting in the Washington Cathedral, paying respect to President Carter, but I know my beloved mother will be on my mind," Melania Trump said in the film’s voiceover.
The first lady’s parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, met in Slovenia in 1966, GQ reported in April 2016. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Ines, in 1968, followed by their second daughter, Melania, whose birth name is Melanija Knavs. Viktor Knavs also has a son, Denis Cigelnjak, from a previous relationship, according to GQ.
