4 of the most controversial quotes from Talarico’s now-viral 2022 sermon

2. 'The Bible doesn't mention abortion'

Stating his view that “the Bible doesn’t mention abortion,” Talarico cited passages from the Old Testament, which states in Exodus 21 that if a woman has a miscarriage as the result of a fight, the offender should be fined, but if the woman dies, then the offender should be executed.

“Our oldest scriptures reject embryonic personhood while affirming female personhood,” Talarico told the congregation.

He also called Evangelical and Catholic opposition to abortion a “relatively new phenomenon" and pointed to the Southern Baptist Convention’s first resolution on abortion, which was passed two years before the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. The Supreme Court overturned that ruling with its 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision.
