4 states offering pride month alternatives that celebrate family

In a June 1 social media post, the Tennessee House Republican Caucus wished state residents a happy Nuclear Family Month. The statement declared that, for the month of June, the political coalition is "celebrating the backbone of our great state and nation: strong families."
The post follows the passage of a joint resolution this year by the Tennessee General Assembly that Gov. Bill Lee signed in April.
State Rep. Bud Hulsey, R-Kingsport, sponsored the resolution, which states that the nuclear family — consisting of a husband and wife and any biological, adopted or fostered children — "is God's perfect design for humanity and is aligned with the long-held traditional values of Tennessee."
The resolution states that "the nuclear family was the basic building block of Tennessee's society throughout her formative years," stressing the need for two-parent homes and the impact of fatherlessness on children.
Tennessee Equality Project Executive Director Chris Sanders opposed the resolution, declaring that it won't stop pride month celebrations in the state.
"That doesn't stop a community that has survived so much for so many years, that is used to surviving and finding creative ways to fight back," Sanders said in a statement published earlier this month by WKRN.
