4 things to know about Berlin pride terrorist Abdul Ballout

1. Suspect sought to enter Syria to join Islamic State

Abdul Ballout previously tried to join the militant Islamic State (also known as IS, ISIS, ISIL or DAESH), according to prosecutors.

The 21-year-old suspect left for Lebanon in 2025, hoping to enter Syria and join the Islamic State, Berlin prosecutors said. Ballout was later arrested and sentenced after making contact with people he believed were members of the group; the charges included incitement to religious and sectarian violence.

In May, Ballout was found guilty of preparing a serious act of violence against the state and publishing Islamic State propaganda on Instagram. He received a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months in youth detention. Berlin prosecutors appealed the sentence.
