4 things to know about Lindsey Graham's sister, Darline Graham Nordone

1. Lindsey Graham was his sister’s legal guardian

Darline Graham Nordone and Lindsey Graham lost both their parents at a relatively young age, The Associated Press reported. Their mother died in 1976 following a battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma, and 15 months later, their father passed away after suffering a heart attack.

Lindsey Graham was in his 20s, and his sister was only 13. The elder Graham sibling became his sister’s legal guardian following the deaths of their parents. Graham also adopted her so she could receive his benefits from his service as a lawyer in the Air Force, NPR reported.

"I can remember the day my father passed away, standing in the living room of that house, absolutely scared to death," Nordone told NPR in 2015. "Lindsey wrapped his arms around me and promised me he would always be there for me and always take care of me."
