4 things to know about the California recall election

If most Californians vote to remove Newsom from office, then the challenging candidate with the most votes will be elected governor of California.

“If 50% or more of the voters vote ‘no’ on the first question, then the recall has failed and the Governor Newsom will remain in office,” explains the California Secretary of State’s website.

Should Californians vote to remove Newsom from office, his replacement will serve the remainder of his term, which is scheduled to end on Jan. 2, 2023.

After voting concludes on Sept. 14, counties will have 30 days to complete their official canvass. Thirty-eight days after the recall, if it is successful, the Secretary of State will certify the results.
