5 highlights from Tuesday's primary races
2. Republicans win Georgia Supreme Court races
While most of the major races on Tuesday’s ballot will not be decided until the fall, races for two seats on the Georgia Supreme Court were resolved in a single round. Both sitting Supreme Court justices on the ballot won their races, with one prevailing overwhelmingly.
Although Supreme Court races in Georgia are officially nonpartisan, Republicans and Democrats backed preferred candidates in Tuesday’s elections, and both Republican-backed justices won.
Unofficial results show Georgia Supreme Court Justice Sarah Warren winning reelection with about 59.9% of the vote while carrying nearly every county in the state. Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charlie Bethel captured about 51.1% of the vote.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, supported both justices, while former President Barack Obama endorsed their opponents, Jen Jordan and Miracle Rankin, respectively.
Tuesday’s results mean justices appointed by Kemp and his predecessor, fellow Republican Nathan Deal, including Warren and Bethel, will remain a majority on the court for the foreseeable future.
Georgia was one of the closest states in the 2024 presidential election, which Trump carried by a margin of nearly 2.2 percentage points. The state is expected to remain highly competitive in federal and state elections.
